Frequently Asked Questions - Date Difference Calculator
Does the date difference include both the start and end dates?
Our calculator computes the difference exclusive of the start date but inclusive of the end date. For example, from Jan 1 to Jan 2 is counted as 1 day difference. This follows the convention used by most project management and business applications.
How do I calculate business days between two dates?
Business days exclude weekends and optionally holidays. Basic calculation: total days minus weekends (approximately 2/7 of the days). For exact results, count weekdays individually or use a business day calculator that accounts for holidays.
How are months calculated in date differences?
Months are calculated by comparing calendar months. The difference between March 15 and June 10 is 2 full months plus 26 days (or 2 months in integer terms). Different applications may round differently, so our calculator shows months as an integer.
What is the ISO 8601 date format and why is it used?
ISO 8601 format (YYYY-MM-DD) is an international standard for date representation. It avoids the ambiguity of MM/DD/YYYY vs DD/MM/YYYY formats, sorts correctly as text, and is the format used by this calculator and most programming systems.
How do I use date difference for project management?
In project management, date differences help calculate task durations, critical path lengths, and resource allocation periods. Always account for non-working days and be consistent about whether starts or ends of dates are included in your calculations.
