Frequently Asked Questions - Percentage Calculator
How do I calculate what percentage one number is of another?
Divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. For example, if you scored 45 out of 60 on a test: 45 / 60 = 0.75, then 0.75 x 100 = 75%. This is the most common percentage calculation.
How do I add a percentage to a number?
Multiply the original number by (1 + percentage / 100). For example, adding 20% to $80: $80 x 1.20 = $96. This is useful for calculating tips, markups, and price increases.
How do I calculate percentage change between two numbers?
Percentage change = (New - Original) / |Original| x 100. If a stock goes from $50 to $60, the increase is (60 - 50) / 50 x 100 = 20%. If it goes from $50 to $40, the decrease is (40 - 50) / 50 x 100 = -20%.
What is the difference between percentage points and percent?
Percentage points refer to the absolute difference between two percentages, while percent refers to relative difference. If interest rates rise from 4% to 5%, that is a 1 percentage point increase but a 25% increase in the rate.
How do I calculate a percentage backwards?
If you know a final amount after a percentage increase, divide by (1 + percentage / 100). For a $120 item after 20% markup: $120 / 1.20 = $100 original price. For a decrease, divide by (1 - percentage / 100).
