The Formula and How to Apply It
The calculation depends on your efficiency unit. For km/L: Liters Needed = Distance(km) ÷ Efficiency(km/L). For L/100km: Liters Needed = Distance(km) × Efficiency(L/100km) ÷ 100. For MPG: Gallons = Distance(miles) ÷ Efficiency(MPG). Multiply the fuel volume by the fuel price to get the total cost. Remember that fuel efficiency varies with driving conditions — highway, city, and mixed driving produce different values.
Formula: Fuel Cost = (Distance ÷ Fuel Efficiency) × Fuel Price; Fuel Needed = Distance ÷ Efficiency
Practical Example
Driving from KL to Penang (approximately 350 km one way) in a car that gets 15 km/L, with RON95 petrol at RM 2.05/liter. Liters needed: 350 ÷ 15 = 23.3 liters. Fuel cost one way: 23.3 × RM 2.05 = RM 47.85. Round trip: RM 95.70. If your car gets 12 km/L instead, the round trip cost jumps to RM 119.58. Compare with a hybrid car at 25 km/L: only RM 57.40 round trip. The efficiency difference saves RM 62+ on just one road trip.
Regional Differences
In Malaysia, the most common fuel is RON95 (subsidized, currently RM 2.05/liter, though this changes with government subsidy adjustments). RON97 is unsubsidized and priced at market rates (fluctuates weekly). Diesel is also subsidized. Fuel prices are announced weekly (Wednesday announcement, Thursday implementation). East Malaysia (Sabah/Sarawak) sometimes has slightly different pricing. Cross-border refueling to Singapore/Thailand involves different pricing structures.
